Dog sledding is as much a part of Minnesota as forest trails or frozen lakes. The card was originally sold to Grandma’s Saloon and Deli as a T-shirt for “The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.” It originally had an empty sled, but Mary Carlson at Grandma’s added the roller coaster pup idea to the concept. About a decade later, we decided to ask permission to reprint the image of the T-shirt as a card. The Grandma’s front office was nice enough to granted us permission, and we proceeded to run the card as “The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.” While the card was on the printing press at Stewart Taylor Printers in Duluth, Minnesota and about to be run, we realized that we never received permission from the marathon board to run its name. Hence, we quickly had to scramble to rename the card. I morphed the most famous sled dog marathon ‘The Iditarod’ with my own name to come up with the ‘The Idikarod.’ We actually could not have come up with a better name. One of my favorite card designs to date because it captures a perspective borrowing from Bill Watterson’s ‘Calvin and Hobbes with a great name. It instantly became one of our best sellers. We plan to re-run the card in the fall of 2018 or in the first of the year in 2019.
